General Introduction

For years now, Magellan GPS units have gone toe to toe with Garmin units (and, to a lesser extent, TomTom units) in a battle for vehicle GPS supremacy.

And while the fight has been pretty much give and take, with one brand getting just ahead of the other for just a short while until the other releases a new innovative product a few months later, Magellan has been winning that war for some time with their Roadmate lineup.

With a very impressive run of advanced vehicle GPS units, Magellan Roadmate GPS devices come complete with stunning full-color displays, responsive touchscreen interfaces, amazingly accurate GPS satellite reception nearly everywhere and anywhere you could hope to travel – and they are the only brand in the business that have partnered up with AAA.

Combine that with the fact that they can be infinitely customized to your hearts content (with Magellan brand accessories as well as a number of third-party solutions as well), and you’re looking at a top-of-the-line product lineup that you can trust.

Hopefully you pay close attention to this quick Magellan Roadmate breakdown to better inform yourself about these amazing devices!

Features

There are almost too many positive features and really special benefits that Magellan Roadmate GPS units bring to the table to list – but we are going to try our hardest to let you know about the most important ones!

The first thing that you’re going to notice (almost immediately) is the fact that almost all of the Magellan Roadmate units come complete with oversized (but not unwieldy) GPS screens. Some of the Magellan Roadmate units come complete with a 4.3 inch screen, but most of the newer ones come with at least (AT LEAST) a 5 inch screen – with some of them even larger than that!

You’ll also be able to take advantage of the patented One Touch interface that Magellan Roadmate solutions have been built around for years now. Instead of having to fight and find all of the specific things that you are looking for on your device – diving headfirst into menu upon menu while you are navigating your vehicle, forcing you to unsafely take your eyes off of the road – the One Touch command module lets you get to the options you are searching for regularly with just a single tap of the screen.

It really doesn’t get much better than this!

Of course, you’re also going to appreciate the fact that every single Magellan Roadmate sold comes complete with 100% free lifetime map updates directly from Magellan themselves. This means that your device will receive at least four map updates every single year, guaranteeing that you are safely and confidently traveling roads to your destination that will get you where you want to be.

On top of that, you’ll have access to a 100% lifetime subscription to up to date and real-time traffic alerts that are pushed directly to your device from Magellan. Tapping into a network of traffic alert systems all throughout the United States, you’ll never have to worry about running into a delay ever again thanks to this lifetime subscription.

Form Factor

As mentioned above, most of the Magellan Roadmate devices out there today come complete with a 4.3 or 5 inch full-color display touchscreen. This makes these devices about the same size as popular smart phone devices and a little bit smaller than most tablets, which is the real “sweet spot” for third-party or add on GPS units in the vehicle.

You’ll have the opportunity to secure your Magellan Roadmate GPS “holster” to nearly any surface in your vehicle (most people pick the dashboard or the windshield), and thanks to the flexibility of this mounting system you’ll be able to keep it out of your normal field of view but still in a position where you can get instant information about your navigation.

The 4.3 and 5 inch color screens are also perfect sized for providing just enough information without becoming overwhelming, and each of these displays are easy enough to read without squinting or taking your eyes off of the road for too long.

Accuracy

Accuracy is off the charts, but most of the best GPS units out there today are just as accurate as the Magellan Roadmate series. Obviously, few other GPS units provide you with a lifetime subscription to map updates and traffic alerts, which help to boost the “accuracy” of this Magellan line of units considerably.

Durability

While not exactly the kind of device that you’d want to toss around for too long, it’s not a GPS unit that is going to break down after you hit a couple of bumps in the road.

Incredibly durable and capable of providing accurate GPS readings even in some extreme temperatures, you’ll want to keep this unit inside your vehicle and out of harm’s way as much as you can – but you should still be able to get 10 years or more use out of it without any real effort.

Final Verdict

As far as the vehicle GPS units are concerned, you would be hard-pressed to find any products that can compete directly with the Magellan Roadmate lineup. All the above models are very good in their ranges, as well as the Magellan 5045LM and 9400LM which we have recently thoroughly tested.

They are just that impressive!
